
There is no denying that purchasing long term care insurance policies in the state of Massachusetts is considered quite expensive. Furthermore, if the person enrolled is well advanced in age and requires greater benefits that the usual, there’s the tendency for long term care policies to cost even more.
There are several ways in which to obtain long term care services in the state. Some services are provided right at home, with assistance ranging from performing household chores to assisting with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, grooming, eating, and moving around. Long term care services are also available in community setting, in which the elderly is enrolled in social day care and adult foster care centers. Those requiring specialized care may also get it through respite care or hospice care services. The state also has several facilities specialized in giving long term care, such as nursing homes and assisted living communities.
Generally, there are two types of long term care insurance policies available to residents of Massachusetts. One is what is termed the individual policy which is sold directly to individual consumers. This type of long term care policy usually has several features, such as the guaranteed renewal, non-cancelable, has elimination period of less than 365 days, must provide minimum coverage period of 730 days, must not impose exclusion period for pre-existing conditions for more than six months, must provide coverage even if the policyholder has been diagnosed with mental illness, Alzheimer’s disease, or develops alcohol and chemical dependency. Long term care insurance policies must also offer opportunity for inflation protection and for policyholders to purchase non-forfeiture benefits.
The other type of long term care insurance policy that is available for purchase is a group policy which offered through employers and associations as part of membership benefits.
The state offers its own Medicaid program, the MassHealth, which pays for nursing home stay of eligible residents. It is administered by the Massachusetts Division of Medical Assistance. Long term care services are also available in association with the Veterans Administration, which may be obtained through the Massachusetts Department of Veterans’ Services.
